Charles Johnson

Charles Johnson, 63, of Rock Island, passed away Tuesday, May 10, 2011, at his home.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Progressive Baptist Church, Davenport.  Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island, and additional visitation will be held Monday one hour prior to services at the church.  Burial will be at National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, with military honors by American Legions 569, 200 and VFW 1303.  Memorials may be made to American Heart Association, Destiny Baptist Church, Rock Island, or Progressive Baptist Church, Davenport.

Charles was born on Dec. 26, 1947, in Brinkley, Ark., the son of Alfred and Ruth Moss Johnson.  He graduated from Rock Island High School in 1966, where he competed in football and track.  He married Susan Hudson on Sept. 14, 1974, in First Baptist Church, Des Moines.

Mr. Johnson was employed by the United States Department of Defense for more than 30 years as an IT specialist, retiring in 2006.

Charles loved spending time with his family, especially his granddaughter.  He enjoyed coaching his son's Valley Little League teams, working on his cars and computers and watching sports.

Mr. Johnson was a Vietnam War veteran, having served in the Air Force.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Susan; mother, Ruth; children, Jasmine Johnson, Charles "Joe" Johnson; grandchildren, Kaylee and Oliver; siblings, Betty Salton, Sam Johnson, Kenneth Johnson, Doris Jones and Pastor Donald William (Rhonda) Johnson; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Alfred; sister, Joe Ann Newborn; nephew, Kevin Salton.
